Art in Support of Healing: Medical Humanities and Medical Training

At a time when medicine appears increasingly governed by the cold logic of data, Guarino and Ferrara urge us to reopen the space for listening, beauty, and human touch. Their voices intertwine in a narrative that restores a sensitive and relational dimension to medical education—one in which art—be it painting, theater, or storytelling—is not a mere embellishment, but a vital instrument of care.
The Medical Humanities emerges as a necessary response to the dehumanization of clinical practice, offering the ability to refine perception, embrace silence, and transform distance into connection. Through practices such as Visual Thinking Strategies, we come to see that a silent, yet profound dialogue can arise between a work of art and a vulnerable body.
Within this shared space, medicine becomes once again an act of love, and art a gentle gesture of accompaniment. For to heal, ultimately, is to see, to listen, and to restore meaning.
