Art in Support of Healing: Medical Humanities and Medical Training
Michele Guarino, Vincenza Ferrara
There are men and women who, with their contribution, scored decisively medicine and science history. Their stories do not just tell about suffering from a disease, but they underline also solutions and discoveries that have changed the medical practice. His invention of the stethoscope marked a revolution in the medical practice. The simple act of using a cylinder from paper to listen to heartbeats changed the face of medicine, including the technique as help for the diagnosis. Laennec did not just refine his invention, but with it he led medicine to a new level, where technique joined knowledge and human sensitivity. His lesson is clear: medicine must combine humanity of doctors and scientific precision, finding a balance that makes the medical practice both measurable and accessible, but without losing its empathic and human dimensions.
Born in 1996, he studied philosophy, writing and publishing, and still does so today: he writes articles for several online cultural publications, works with publishing houses as editor, editor and reader, and is involved in projects and events always related to the world of literature and art in general. Among others, he now collaborates with the Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, Feltrinelli, Einaudi and Locarno Film Festival.
