In a world characterized by globalization and economic crises, Leonardo Becchetti proposes an alternative vision of the economy: a system that places generativity at its core, viewing it as the capacity to create positive impacts on communities and the environment. The pandemic, inflation, and the Ukraine conflict are among the events prompting a reassessment of current economic models. According to Becchetti, establishing a welfare economy requires the use of generativity indicators and the promotion of practices that enhance collective welfare.
One example of this transformation can be found in energy communities, which facilitate the co-production of renewable energy, as well as in initiatives of active citizenship that align economic activity with values. The goal is a future where economies consist of resilient networks capable of fostering social and environmental sustainability, and where the drive for civic engagement and cooperation becomes the true wealth of democracies.
