A lucid and passionate reflection on the theme of care, authored by Professor Natalino Irti. Through words that invite thought to pause and breaks that suggest the time for deep reflection, a question unfolds that, starting from an etymological insight, illuminates normative, philosophical, and ultimately vital aspects of one of the most delicate and intimate human relationships: that between doctor and patient.
At the heart of this relationship lies the great theme of freedom. The patient is free, capable of exercising their own will and their right to be adequately informed: it is then the doctor's task to guarantee this freedom and provide all the necessary tools to exercise it without constraints.
The relationship between doctor and patient is, above all, a relationship between human beings: «illness is a sick person». There can be no «technique of therapy» without the «care of the patient». It is here that the theme of the individual's «dignity» and their personal therapeutic journey arises.
Natalino Irti, born in Avezzano on April 5, 1936. He attended the Gymnasium â Torlonia High School in his native city. Student of the great jurist Emilio Betti - after obtaining a university degree in 1965, he won the teacher recruitment exam for full professor in 1967. He has taught as a professor, at the Universities of Sassari, Parma, Turin, and, since 1975, at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", where he is now Professor Emeritus of civil law.
He is a national member of the Accademia dei Lincei, and a member of other scientific associations.
President of the Italian Institute for Historical Studies, founded by Benedetto Croce.
He has published monographs, lecture courses and books on legal philosophical culture, which have aroused wide debates and have been translated into many foreign languages. His relationship with philosophers was intense: two volumes were born: "Dialogue on Law and Technique", with Emanuele Severino; and "In Praise of Law"., with Massimo Cacciari. Discontinuous, but uninterrupted, has been his collaboration with Italian newspapers (Corriere della Sera, il Sole 24 Ore).
