Vincenzo Denaro always knew he would become a doctor. He knew it as a child, walking through the sun-drenched streets of Avola, and later, as a teenager, when he challenged the waves of the Ionian Sea. He had no doubts—he never had. In his imagination lived the figure of the village doctor – the one who knows everything about everyone, who can master the mechanics of the human body and, at the same time, read suffering in a glance, a gesture, a silence. There was one desire: to care. And that is why he never had any doubts.
Professor Denaro’s journey in medicine has been a voyage of self-discovery, across Italy and the world, in a continuous dialogue between experience and research, attention and progress. From his Sicily to Pavia – his wife would have followed him anywhere except into the fogs of the Po Valley, and yet, when the moment came, she did more than follow: she truly accompanied him. Then beyond national borders: first to France, then to Canada, and finally to the Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, where he arrived at the very beginning, helping to lay the foundations of what would become a national point of reference for healthcare. At every stage, his path followed the conviction that one must be an expert in a field, but also capable of doing everything.
At his side were mentors – such as Professor Cortesini, whose pioneering medicine we also wrote about in Kaleido Story – as well as encounters and opportunities: every piece of this great mosaic gradually built the most beautiful adventure a human being can live, that of being at the service of others.
In a life that seems to contain thousands, the constant point of reference has always been the idea of caring for the person, not just the patient, in a new and empathetic way. And so, just as in childhood he chased the sea and its reflections, today Vincenzo Denaro, Scientific Director of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation and Professor Emeritus of Orthopedics and Traumatology, allows his guiding star to continue leading him toward a medicine that embraces the wholeness of humanity—from the most mechanical dimension to the spiritual, from the skin to the soul, in all its nuances.
